Morality: Comparing Human and Animal Behavior

Are humans inclined to do good? If you asked Rosseau, the natural moral state of human beings is to be compassionate. On the other hand Spinoza would think that evil is simply a matter of personal preference and Jung might even say that evil is the dark side of God.

Compared to humans, we have several amazing accounts that relate how some animals are capable of doing "good" things outside their regular behaviour. We should really think over our definition of morality.

Nat Geo presents this amazing video which shows how animals are capable of developing complex, rewarding interactions in situations that lie outside of their natural instincts. You have to watch it, it really is heartwarming.

Here's some background of the Nat Geo video:

The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species (T.I.G.E.R.S.) is a wildlife education organization, dedicated to promoting global conservation with interactive programs according to their website.

Founded by a Bhagavan "Doc" Antle in 1982, focusing on wildlife education shows that unite animals and humans so they can interact in positive and productive ways. This "animal ambassadors", as T.I.G.E.R.S names them, have appeared in several TV shows, films and documentaries. Their exposure has given financial support to their fellow members of their species making possible several programs around the globe.

So comparing this huge animal acts of kindness and generosity, to what was found on the infamous Stanford prison experiment is simply striking .

Society is simply an extension of each and everyone, thereby how society behaves is they way that human nature works. It is definitely not something inspiring, even less after learning about the Stanford Prison experiment. The Lucifer Effect is a great book that helps us truly understand the implications of the experiment were through the pen of the very designer of the experiment, Phillip Zambardo.

So do you think humans are naturally inclined to do good?
What were your reactions to both videos?

For those of you who can't recognize this painting, it is Claude Monet's "Impression, Sunrise" one of the catalyst of his huge popularity. To learn more about Monet, you can go here to intermonet.com, a great website about him.

If I may, I would also suggest listening to Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14, one of the richest pieces of music that has ever been created. Enjoying this version by Willhem Kempff is a must.

Wikileaks and their newest release of 400,000 U.S. military documents

Wikileaks is a name that you will be hearing plenty of times through the mainstream media.Because they just released 400,000 military documents that detail from “ground level” the Afghan and Iraqi war, and even accuses the U.S. Of commiting war crimes.
Wikileaks is according to their website: “A developing, uncensorable Wikipedia for untraceable mass document leaking and analysis. Our primary interest is in exposing oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to people of all regions who wish to reveal unethical behavior in their governments and corporations.” Julian Assange is the man behind Wikileaks, an australian journalist, hacker and internet activist that has been traveling around the world after the creation of the website.
He has been part of mysterious complots such as two women claimed that Assange had raped them while he was visiting Stockholm, but the accusation was found as baseless. We aim for maximum political impact. The prosecutor of the case, Eva Finne said: "I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape", so the curious thing is why was the target of two false accusations of rape? There are all kinds of theories but nothing has been proven yet.
Just today, October 22 2010, Wikileaks uploaded the rest of the military documents that it had in their possession. The website had already posted many documents that led to a great controversy among Washington highest political circles; how damaging could that information really be? Some military advisors said that Wikileaks was putting in risk the lives of multiple Afghan civilians that were part of intelligence field operations, that arguments sounds more of a cheap excuse rather than a valid objection but still Wikileaks took extra time and care to review all of the 400,000 documents so details like those would not be overlooked.
The U.S Department of Defense just published a press release in which blames Wikileaks on risking the soldiers lives: "The documents just published, do expose secret information that could make our troops even more vulnerable to attack in the future." You can find the documents in here http://warlogs.wikileaks.org/ , there is a current cooperative effort in the Web to rate and classify the just released documents.
It will be very interesting to see how the PR department of the Pentagon plays its hand because this issue can really blow up in Obama’s face and that is definitely the last thing he needs facing the upcoming elections in which the democrats are being seen as the underdogs so imagine what could this mean to their already decreasing popularity.
What do you think about Wikileaks? Do you think it’s responsible to put the documents coming from whistleblowers? IMO I think it’s a great way to have some sort of “checks and balances”, so people can really notice what is truly happening and not just believe blindly the story that is actually being reported.

The Real War In Mexico: How Democracy Can Defeat The Drug Cartels Analysis

I have already talked about the new MacBook Air and how it will affect iPad sales, I have also posted a review from one of my favorite documentaries, Keith Crossrow Truth in 24, so now it's time to jump into the foreign affairs realm and talk about an eye opening essay called "The Real War in Mexico: How Democracy Can Defeat The Drug Cartels" by Shannon O'Neil.

In “The Real War In Mexico”, an article in Foreign Affairs magazine, Shannon O’Neil describes the current situation in Mexico. O’Neil states, “Hysteria over bloodshed in Mexico clouds the real challenge. The rising violence is a product of democratization, and the only real solution is to continue strengthening Mexican democracy”. Her main point is that the war that the Mexican government is currently fighting is a result of the paradigm shift in the relations between drug cartels and government officials. Despite the crackdown, violence has made difficult to govern democratically. She supports it by showing how the drug war risks the growth of the Mexican democracy, its vibrant middle class, and U.S.-Mexico relations.
The political future of Mexico is one of the topics O’Neil explains: “The question is not whether the Mexican state will fail. It will not. The actual risk of the violence today is that it will undermine democracy tomorrow.” Paradoxical as it sounds, this current violence comes as a result of “Ties between Mexico’s long-ruling political party, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the drug traffickers solidified by the end of World War II.” For years these two co-existed smoothly but during the last twenty years, the situation has changed. Drug traffickers are no longer invincible under the protection of Mexican government officials, and the cooperation with the U.S. government has helped by providing intelligence data, weaponry and expertise, making it much harder for the drug cartels to evade justice.
The role of the Mexican middle class has been and will continue to be an important factor in the current conflict. This big sector, around 30% of the population, was the one that helped Calderon win the 2006 elections against the leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, so the middle class support trust in the Mexican president has been key against the proposals of diverse Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) to remove the army from the streets. O’Neil states, “A secure and growing middle class would help move Mexico further down the road toward achieving democratic prosperity and toward and increasingly able partnership with the U.S.” But at the same time, it can’t be denied that the current economic climate in Mexico is going against the middle class. O’Neil wrote that “Mexico’s middle class is threatened not just by the lack of public security, but also by the growing economic crisis.”
The role of U.S-Mexico relation is a key to understanding the current problem, according to O’Neil.  On one hand: “the United States needs to develop a comprehensive policy to bolster North American security -- one that treats Mexico as an equal and permanent partner.”  On the other: “Mexico’s challenge is no less than recreating its law enforcement and judicial systems.” So the two countries have different tasks to approach the drug trafficking problem. Obviously, Mexico has much more direct contact with the problem, as it mainly affects its population with the ongoing violence resulting from Calderon’s declared war against drug traffic. “Since taking office in December 2006, Calderon has mobilized some 45,000 troops to combat drug trafficking organizations. Record number of interdictions, arrests, and extraditions to the United States have interrupted business as usual.”, according to O’Neil.
“The Real War in Mexico” is a referential article that informs the readers in a factual and deep way the interesting relation between Mexico’s war against drug traffic and the U.S., and, more importantly about the very base of the Mexican society, its middle class. Proof of this is the next quotation: “Benefiting from economic opening and stability, Mexico’s middle class is now nearly 30 million strong. It is these voters that ushered both Presidents Fox and Calderon into office, and that have supported Calderon’s security efforts so far.”
Shannon O’Neil does an outstanding job of allowing readers to have a greater understanding of the Mexican war on drugs, probably challenging the readers idea about the current situation in Mexico. She does not take any side on the conflict, even acknowledging the U.S. responsibility and that a different approach to his problem is needed. She claims that the solution lies in the Mexican middle class.
The democratization process that Mexico has been going through during the last twenty years has been a crucial factor in the war on drugs. Added to the current growth of the Mexican middle class, it has changed the way drug cartels interact with the Mexican state. At the same time, U.S.-Mexico relations need to be transformed into an equal, supportive interaction to combat this regional problem.

What do you guys think about this transnational issue and how it is developing throughout the Mexican territory?

Truth in 24 Review

Truth in 24 Review
Truth in 24 is a documentary from Keith Crossrow about Audi's participation in the 2008 Le Mans 24. It is an outstanding film that shows with an incredible level of detail how hard is to win the most famous endurance race in the motor sport world. Keith show you in a eye opening way the experiences of the different members of the race team, from mechanics, drivers to the team coordinator.
The cinematography mastery of Truth in 24 is astonishing, supported by the high definition filming, turns into an exquisite menu of visual effects while the Audi R10s take the famous Le Mans curves at 195 miles per hour. The use of different cameras and effects give the 100 minute film a refreshing take. Thanks to this, the documentary is incredibly enjoyable even for someone who is not a car enthusiast.
The use of the different sounds helps to truly understand the complexity of Le Mans racing cars. For example a Corvette has a totally different sound than a Ferrari F40 or the Audi’s R10 turbo diesel engine. The use of certain classical music pieces increases the dramatic factor throughout the race. Added to the precise, rich narration from Jason Staham, who shows us a refreshing facet that one would not expect from the main actor of The Transporter 2.
The current level of technological mastery that the teams have reached in the 24 hours of Le Mans is skillfully displayed during the film. For example it is amazing how choosing the right tire makes the difference between winning or losing the race, or how the different teams compulsively practice the procedures during pit stops. It really opens your mind regarding the complexity of this kind of races, the spirit of Le Mans is magically captured on this documentary.
From behind the scenes, there is so much that was unseen before this film. Such a challenging endeavor, becomes possible thanks to the expertise that the several elements of each team contribute with. It truly takes you to a personal level, so the viewer starts identifying himself with them. This connection makes the viewer feel expectant of what is going to happen next through the race.
The incredible amount of interesting details that are shown, the outstanding use of cinematography and the soundtrack to really capture the action, added to the perfect narration from Staham turns Truth in 24 into an suspenseful documentary that has you on the edge of your seat. Thanks to this attention to detail, I have to say Truth in 24 is one of the most amazing films of this kind that I have ever seen.

Has anybody seen Truth in 24, if so, what did you think about it?

The New Macbook Air

The New MacBook Air
Just today, Steve Jobs announced in the Back to the Mac event, the new, updated version of the MacBook Air. Aesthetically it is that sleek, sexy gadget most people weren’t able to spare $1,600 on it. Those who could, simply wouldn't justify the purchase of such a “toy” for that steep price. This trend had left the outdated MacBook Air up in the limbo. It was one of the most gorgeous industrial designs we had ever seen but simply at that price range, it wasn’t feeling much love. On the other hand, the updated MacBook Air models start at $999 and $1,199 for the 11.6” models, and $1,299 and $1,599 for the higher end of the 13” version.

Talking about specs, it has a new flash based storage that comes from 64GB all the way to 256GB, this was a big change for Apple as the flash storage comes with multiple benefits such as immediate boot up, increased durability and reduced energy consumption. The NVIDIA GeForce 320M guarantees a quality performance for normal tasks, it goes without saying that the new MacBook Air is not a performance oriented laptop. All the versions come with 2GB RAM memory (expandable to 4GB for $99), there were some reports about the RAM memory not being user upgradable but this rumor has not been confirmed.

Engadget earlier posted a video, in which we can really appreciate how small is the 11.6” MacBook Air. Its design is absolutely staggering, and it seems like the perfect match for those who care about not carrying “dead weight” around enough to sacrifice the well known disadvantages of the MacBook Air such as the lack of CD drive or a bigger hard drive.

To be fair, the new price tag starting at $999 puts the new MacBook Air into the sights of a completely different market, such as students who are likely enjoy the benefits of its small size and light weight. Other possible buyers are those power users who need a netbook for when they are “on the go” plus still having the benefits of Mac OS. Even though they aren’t intrinsically related products, some of the high end iPad potential buyers will be tempted by the low end 11” MacBook Air, thereby cannibalizing the iPad sales. This will happen mostly because the iPad market still isn’t outlined so people who lay in the middle will tend to buy the new MacBook air instead.

What do you think about it, do you think it will hurt iPad sales at all?
Use the comment section to carry this discussion on.

Steve Jobs & the new MacBook Air

Bienvenidos, Welcome, Bienvenue, Bem-vindos, Willkomen

First of all, I want to welcome people from all over the world that are here visiting Raison D’Être.

Let’s start explaining what does this french term truly means: According to Wikipedia (a truly enlightening source of information which teachers tend to hate without truly specifying the reasons behind their fears, some of them valid concerns about the veracity of the wiki entries, a topic which I will talk about on the near future), Raison d'être is a French phrase meaning "reason for existence."

Some will say it sounds much more of a metaphysical topic rather than a plausible way of living, I will give you that. But what Raison D’Être is truly about, comes from my incessant interest on such a diverse array of topics. This has been my life story learning about plenty of different topics,(you will end up believing me when I say you will learn more here than what Stumble Upon can teach you). I really hope that people start interacting through the posts so we can have further discussion and analysis.

The basic notion of how the past through cyclical patterns affects the future, is what really makes this way of thinking useful. It’s not about the literal benefits of knowing about medieval warfare or Schrodinger’s cat, it is about being constantly searching for knowledge that can be applied in life sooner than you think. Entrepreneurs have always used this to their advantage, those unapparent connections that can be made to power innovative business ideas have mostly come from this never ending search of knowledge, note that I’m not saying you have to know everything about anything, but being aware of how the world is interlaced.

I encourage everyone to comment in every single post I write, so a true writer-reader relationship can be developed in Raison D'Être. It is not a secret that the majority of blogs are short lived and come as a result of an impulsive decision, but I want to assure you that this won’t be the case. I am fully committed to this blog and its future readers, and I believe that a trust is basic for such interactions.
Know it all.
